Does your favorite couch or chair look like it has been through a shredder? Are you considering making kitty an outside only cat? You love your cat but you can’t think of any other solution to your problem. Cats love to sharpen their nails by scratching and pulling. This makes kitty very happy, and leaves you wanting to wring kitty’s neck! The solution is actually extremely easy. You and kitty can continue with your loving relationship, with kitty indoors.

Solution: Buy a cat tree! Cat trees have become very popular. Not only do they keep cats from shredding the furniture, they are a great source of entertainment for your cat and they provide a ‘safe haven’ for kitty to relax.

Cat trees can be purchased to compliment your home décor, or for just plain functionality. They range from expensive to relatively inexpensive. From very intricate to plain.

    Purchasing your cat tree:

Prior to the purchase, decide where you want to put it. Measure the space; take the tape measure with you to the store. You need to be sure that the cat tree will fit in the space you have selected.
Second, shop around; you may be able to find what you want somewhere else for less money. You can find some great deals on the Internet and they state the measurements for each item.
Third, make sure your choice of cat tower has either sisal rope or rug on it for the cat to scratch on.
Fourth, Very Important! Buy a spritz bottle of liquid catnip; this is sold in almost any pet storecat tree.

You are home and have put the cat tree where you want it. Unfortunately, the cat thinks it’s something from Friday the 13th, cat style! Pick kitty up and set him on the tree, stand there with him so he doesn’t run away. Let him sniff and see that it is not going to eat him! Now (this is where you are smarter than the cat!) take the bottle of catnip and liberally spray the scratch areas, and a little on the resting places. You may have to do this a couple of times. It will not take long for kitty to prefer his tree to the furniture.
